A Tough Week In Top Shot 😤
The First Mint
Featuring Pack Problems, Challenge Conundrums, Rookie Rankings, NBA 75 and More
GM, NBA Top Shot Squad – Happy weekend! This week felt like a long one (and I can’t imagine how those who attended NFT NYC are feeling right now), but we made it! Let’s get into all the action from a polarizing week in Top Shot:
P.S. - if you didn’t see Thursday’s issue, it likely went to your spam folder. Looks like Revue had some issues that day, and hopefully won’t happen going forward. But make sure to mark ‘not as spam’ if it does happen!
A Tough Week In Top Shot
What originally looked to be an exciting start to Series 3 turned sour quickly on Thursday, with several head-scratching decisions that brought the pitchforks out among the community.
Let’s start with the WNBA Showcase Challenge #8 release, which featured Diana Taurasi as a reward:
🏆 @WNBA Showcase Challenge #8 🏆
🎖Reward: @DianaTaurasi Fandom
10 Moments Required:
🎒 4x Legendary 'In Her Bag' 3-Pointers
⛹️♀️ 5x @WNBA 3-Pointers
⛹️♀️ 1x @DianaTaurasi
⏰ Deadline: Monday, Nov. 8 @ 10 AM PDT https://t.co/IDU6ehZwbr
Four legendary moments! Sentiment across the community was overwhelmingly negative — including many users who had actively been trying to collect a full Fandom set that were now tasked with one of the hardest challenges in recent memory. Additionally, as pointed out by Top Shot OG @Veerman, the Collector Score element leaves you walking away with some major questions:
WNBA Showcase Challenge 8 Reward:
Diana Taurasi Fandom Moment = 15 CS
Requirements:
1 x Diana Taurasi = 20 CS
4 x WNBA In Her Bag Moments (3 pointer) = 4000 CS
5 x WNBA Moments (3 pointer) = 100 CS
So 4120 CS is required to earn a 15 CS Moment. Seems poorly thought out.🤔 https://t.co/6fgoLahDO8
Challenge and Collector Score aside, we also had the hyped up first base drop of Series 3 — with a new wrinkle of users being able to secure 10 packs at a time.
Predictably, having some users get TEN packs while the majority of users got zero (and potentially spent upwards of 2-3 hours in the queue waiting) was not a great experience for a LOT of people.
We even saw some criticism from some of the most positive voices in the community. @OtisTopShot, for example:
I love NBA Top Shot. I'm still super bullish long-term on TS, and Dapper in general.
BUT, I am really getting sick of poor communication and very easily avoidable mistakes marring the user experience for me and others.
A quick thread:
(Tagging @Eisenberg43 and @roham)
If we’re keeping track, pretty much every segment of the user base was unhappy after Thursday:
People that didn’t get the drop angry that many users got 10 packs
People who got packs complaining that they pulled garbage moments or duplicates in a mostly underwhelming drop
Collectors mad because the Diana Taurasi moment makes a full Fandom set extremely difficult, and that WNBA CS doesnt seem logical
Everyone is mad at how long the drop took
I’ve been critical of Top Shot in the past for scarcity issues, and a lack of creating value for holders/users on a large scale. It appears @DanVerno feels a similar way — and might be jamming with Roham on some ideas soon?
Just a weird, weird end of the week for Top Shot. This Michael Scott quote comes to mind:
Rookie Rankings 🍼
One of the few bright spots this week was the hype surrounding the rookies (which stayed relatively scarce at 4,000 edition sizes) in the first base drop. With six available, including the three (Evan Mobley, Davion Mitchell and Jalen Suggs) who recently partnered with Top Shot to allow fans to choose which moment would be their first.
A look at the low asks on the market a day after the drop:
🍼 MARKET MOVERS: ROOKIES 🍼
Low-ask prices of the 6 rookies in yesterday's @nbatopshot Series 3, Release 1 Base Drop:
🔹 Evan Mobley | $220
🔹 Jalen Suggs | $144
🔹 Davion Mitchell | $101
🔹 Moses Moody | $57
🔹 Jalen Johnson | $43
🔹 Josh Christopher | $40 https://t.co/Q878FHHJfK
REMEMBER - if you’re thinking about grabbing one of these, there is still a bunch of supply yet to be released. Prices will always be higher when there is less supply available, and we’ve got another common drop coming on Friday, Nov. 12 that should contain a lot of the remaining serials not yet in circulation.
Miscellaneous Mentions ✍️
We had both the Vintage Vibes Chris Bosh Showcase and the Quavo NFT NYC Showcase come to an end on Friday. While the winners of the Quavo challenge have yet to be announced, the 41,677 completions of the Bosh challenge were distributed on Friday afternoon (low ask at $6 as of this writing).
Get ready for those @chrisbosh rewards 🎁

Additionally, the community noticed an interesting symbol on the #75 serials of the Series 3 moments… Which Top Shot confirmed will be present on all moments this year to celebrate the NBA’s 75th Anniversary. I’d imagine we’ll see some themed challenges or moments around the NBA 75 as well, considering the large push the league has put around it this year.
