🎙️He Sold CryptoPunks For Top Shot | Carlini
This NFT vet holds 34x Derrick Rose legendary moments. And this is NOT his first crypto winter.
What’s up everybody, it’s LG Doucet here.
The end of the year is a time for reflection, relaxation, and resolution.
A great way to start this process it to look back on where we were at this exact time in years past. Personally, a year ago I was working through the holidays, trying to make sense of a business that was less than a year old (was stressful).
In the broader world of NFTs, the 12th month has landed all over the spectrum:
December 2021: up only
December 2020: the space to pop off
December 2019: things are dead, don’t even bother
December 2018: we just crashed hard again
December 2017: what’s this weird new NFT thing
And its from that deep past that we pull today’s guest, Carlini.
The man is a legend in the space and part of the early CryptoKitties cohort (lucky!). He was one of the early buyers of NBA Top Shot back when things were slow and illiquid - to the point where he was able to buy 150x (!!) From The Top packs.
And despite everything that’s happened the man marches on, now deep into building his own project, from which he takes no pay or salary (crazy guy).
The podcast today is not a deep dive; rather it’s an opportunity to hear from a veteran voice and look at the current state of affairs.
Highlights from this one:
The Early Days of NFTs
Why the early days of NFTs are like the early days of gaming
Why Carlini wasn’t surprised by the explosion of the space
Why everyone is “building”, but few actually are
His Collection
Why he has 34x Derrick Rose legendaries on Top Shot
How he sold all his CryptoPunks for the FromTheTop packs
How he’s owned over 100 different CryptoPunks (!!)
His Trading Decisions
How he avoids bad projects (hint: he doesn’t)
His “FOMO Dragon” mentality
Why Trump NFTs are a good thing
The Future of web3
Why the Twitter mob has little impact on where things go
How we need to trick people into the space, one Reddit NFT at a time
His biggest surprise of the last bull run
We giggle a lot in this one. Things heat up towards the 20-minute mark once we get over the nostalgia bit.
Enjoy.
🚀 ICYMI: From MLB Player To NFT Artist | Micah Johnson
Need a feel good story to end the year?
Check out my pod with Micah Johnson, a guy who never picked up a paintbrush in his life until L.A. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts forced him to try a new hobby.
What I like about Micah is his brutal honesty. He didn’t mince words about the challenges he’s faced, and how hard it is to truly make it as an artist.
