Whatâs up everybody, itâs LG Doucet here. And welcome to The First Mint substack.
Starting today, the weekly podcast will come to you in newsletter form. It will feature a write up about the show, along with projects and media on my radar. To avoid confusion, GhostofGregOdenâs newsletter (the one youâve been receiving up until today) has been renamed Basketball & Blockchain. It will drop twice per week.
As for the podcast, you may have noticed Iâve begun to zoom out and focus on the larger questions in NFTs. We will continue down this path as we continue our mission of making NFTs a community-driven experience. More on that later this summer đ
In the meantime, enjoy these trying times as best you can, and remember to smash that like button. Thanks for being with us.
đď¸Todayâs Pod: The Future of Intellectual Property
Iâve never had a guest get HACKED midway through a podcast episode. Until now.
About 10 minutes into our chat, the boys from Tally Labs (creator of the popular Jenkins The Valet NFT collection) realize their Twitter is being hacked, and the interview is cut short. A TFM first!
But fear not, for we picked up the very next day and continued on the conversation about The Future of Intellectual Property in NFTs.
SAFA and Valet Jones (formerly Jenkins) are running one of the most unique projects in the space: creating a book featuring over 4000 licensed NFTs from the Bored Ape Yacht Club and Mutant Ape Yacht Club collections, written by New York Times Bestselling author Neil Strauss.
I absolutely love this concept, and the fact that these guys are so far ahead in terms of leveraging one of the most unique and somewhat permissionless parts of the NFT ecosystem; the access to commercial rights for the NFT you own.
They are taking advantage of this creative licensing model pioneered by Yuga Labs, and developing an entire media empire starting with Jenkins the Ape.
On todayâs show, we spend the first 20 minutes or so discussing their background (and then the twitter hack lol). But the rest of the show focuses on Intellectual Property, and how the world of NFTs will birth an entirely new class of content franchises that are also owned in part by the people consuming the content.
To me, itâs one of the most bullish aspects of all of web3.
So I hope you enjoy the show!
đş ICYMI: Last Weekâs Pod with Jayne, the GM of Top Shot
In case you havenât heard (doubtful at this point), NBA Top Shot has a new boss.
And last week I had the pleasure of sitting down with her for an up front chat on the road that NBATS will take from here, and how her background in Tech Growth will enable the way forward.
Whether youâre still active on TopShot, or âstill hold moments but only check in for dropsâ, I recommend a listen to this one. TS has been a vital part of the NFT boom and where it goes from here will shape the sports NFT ecosystem for years to come.
And thank you for to the community on Twitter for showing their love.
