The Last Show of 2023 🪂
Featuring a *NEW* Collection from The First Mint, NHL Breakaway news, ALL DAY drops, and our final podcast of the year.
Well folks.
We recorded episode #239 of The First Mint yesterday, and it’s going to be our last one for a while! And sadly, I don’t think there will be another newsletter until the new year either.
It’s not the end - but rather, the beginning, at least for myself personally. Those of you who hang out in The First Mint and listen to the show know what I’m talking about 😉
But it wouldn’t be TFM if we didn’t go out with a bang.
So to wrap up our 2023 season, we've decided to throw it all the way back to where it all started.
📦The First Mint Historical Podcast Collection
Yes, you can collect these.
Yes, they only cost a few bucks.
And yes, owning one (or multiple!) will gain you access to a single special channel in our Discord.
Yesterday, we released 5 of our best and most classic episodes from 2021 as NFTs.
It’s been an amazing 3 years making this show and running this channel, and we wanted to honor some of the most epic moments.
How it works:
Buy a historical TFM pod on pods.media
Join our discord once you do.
When you buy one, you’re automatically entered into a DAY ONE raffle.
Collect all 5 pods for a chance at a Wemby Debut 🔥
Support your favorite podcast in the process!!
I’m honestly really excited about this. It’s something I wish we could have done from the very beginning, and now thanks to PODS we finally can!
Over the span of The First Mint’s existence, I’ve tried when possible to push the envelope in the crypto way; to go beyond simply being a podcast, newsletter, and twitter account into something more.
Step by step, I feel like we are getting there and truly aiming towards becoming a native web3 company. And I hope you’ll join us for that ride.
Now, onto the stories of the week.
📦 NHL Breakaway Drops Rookie Set
This is the Breakaway’s Victor Wembanyama moment - except it doesn’t have a marketplace for collectors to set a price on.
This week, NHL Breakaway dropped two sets at the same time: Opening Ice 2023-24, which features Rare (/250 mint) newcomers to the NHL, and a Base Debut LE Pack featuring common highlights minted to /1500.
Opening Ice featues Connor Bedard’s debut NFT, the teenager dubbed as the next great thing in hockey, who currently lead all rookies with 17 points in 19 games. This should be THE nft to get on the platform.
Alas, without a marketplace, the market has clearly not been incentivized enough to play the Bedard lottery, as 28% of the 3,500 Bedard packs still remain unsold.
Then again, this isn’t necessarily always about sellouts and lottery tickets. But for the most highly-touted prospect in years, I would have assumed it was.
wen MP, Breakaway??
🏦 ALL DAY Team Packs go 6x on Mint Price
Wow.
These things were only $4 to purchase, and some sold for as much as $50 on the secondary market! As noted by Phil on this week’s pod, NFL ALL DAY is definitely getting smarter about their drops, and this most recent one proves it.
Last week, they released “Team Packs” on Thanksgiving featuring Uncommon Moments of the teams playing that day.
Only 500 were available for each team in a queue-style drop, with the trick being that one single dynamic legendary moment was hidden in each team’s packs (as in out of 500 packs, only one contained a legendary).
Naturally, this drove secondary price action wild.
For example, that Texans packs held a C.J. Stroud Dynamic Legendary moment, which has a top sale of $1,450 and low ask of $3,500.
Why this method works:
It’s an unpainful way to release overminted moments
It allows the hardos to play the pack lottery for just $4
It juices the secondary market for packs, which in turn is profitable for the rent seekers but not in an outlandish way.
Let’s hope we see more of it this season!
🪡 Top Shot Drops Fresh Threads
Continuing their annual tradition, Top Shot dropped a Fresh Threads set yesterday to highlight players who were on new teams this year. And yet again, it sold out!
Featuring rewards like Damian Lillard and Chris Paul, the drop sold out on Web, Trade Tickets, and Mobile App, with pack reselling between $7-13.
And as of Wednesday afternoon, the floor ranged between $1-3.
📺 Sorare NBA on TV
Not huge news, but I thought this was cool.
Sorare is dishing out for some air time this year, with with their new star-studded campaign featuring Donovan Mitchell and Jalen Brunson hitting the airwaves.
Will it work to bring people in? It’s honestly hard to tell. But we need to applaud the effort to bring sports NFTs to the mainstream, and I think Sorare is doing as good a job as anyone could.
📺 Ronaldo Sued for Promoting Binance
Fresh on the heels of Binance settling their $4.3B lawsuit with the American government comes another $1B lawsuit, this time against Cristiano Ronaldo!
This also comes in the wake of Tom Brady and Steph Curry facing lawsuits following their promotion of FTX. If you want to read an equally poorly-written article to the one linked above, you can read about the FTX lawsuit here.
