Mitchell Mishap 🆘
If you haven’t been plugged in this week, there was some drama Wednesday regarding the distribution of the Donovan Mitchell Throwdowns Challenge.
After rewards were sent out, users across the community started noticing a strange correlation between the date a user joined and serial number for the lowest (best) serials.
Everyone rushing to analyze the past challenge data:
Top Shot quickly released a statement regarding the issue, and followed up later with a full debrief on what went wrong:
Regrettably, we discovered an issue with the randomization step of this new process after prizes were distributed, which resulted in the randomized order for our prize recipients being re-sorted by an internal ID associated with the recipient’s account. This was an isolated incident with this edition of Quests, and randomization for Challenges and other in-product features have been thoroughly battle tested.
The quick and transparent response was a welcome sight, and all users who completed the challenge were given $250 in Dapper credit and a rare pack as compensation.
I highlight ‘all users’ because this is where things got a bit polarizing within the community. For many, rewarding everyone (even those that got high serials) echos a ‘rich get richer’ sentiment that has been frequently felt among lower-end collectors.
However, it’s a tough situation without an easy solution — how do you find an acceptable cutoff point? Should the #15 serial not get compensation, but the #25 should?
Overall, despite the compensation structure above, it was a quick and decisive response from Dapper, which is a step in the right direction. But the trust of a community is fragile, and it only takes a few issues like this for people to lose faith in the system.

Are Challenge Rewards truly random?
Around The First Mint 🗣
Yesterday’s challenge rewards for the Donovan Mitchell moment were released with some errors; older collector accounts were given many of the low serials, which prompted a response and then compensation from NBA Top Shot. But is that enough to regain trust from the Top Shot faithful? On today’s show, we’ve got LG and Producer Quad on to give both sides of a very contentious issue. And yes, we’re breaking routine here - this Wednesday’s episode is NOT about other NFTs, as has been the norm.
