Featuring A Run It Back Announcement, A Leaderboard Snapshot, 80's Hair Flow, Not-So-Legendary Larry Bird & More
Good Morning, B&B Fam! Hope you all had an excellent week, and cheers to the weekend!
After a bit of a quiet time in the NBA blockchain streets, we’ve had some major developments over the last few days. Pump that music up:
No time to waste, let’s get into all the action from the last few days:
Run It Back Release ⏮
The first major Top Shot NBA pack release in what feels like forever was announced on Thursday, throwing it back to 1986-87 for three upcoming drops:
What I like and don’t like about this drop:
❤️ The Likes:
The art, vibes and marketing materials are fantastic. Timelord (TS video producer) is a master of his craft, and this announcement vid was spectacular.
I also like the player selections, and I am confident the curation of moments will be well done. Excited to see legends like this added to the platform:
80’s hair flow (like Tom Chambers below) just hits different:
👎 The Dislikes:
I think this release would be better served coming AFTER the Series 4 roadmap drops. These packs are serious $, and I definitely want to know more about what else is coming (and the direction of the platform) in S4 before making a large investment right now. As Veerman eloquently puts:
With the community chatter falling back onto supply issues right now, these three separate drops (132,000 new moments) do little to quell the oversupply fear — especially with no news yet of the S4 burn/supply plan.
Larry Bird’s debut is a rare, but Kevin McHale gets a legendary moment?
The price points for the top tier (Run It Back Legacies) — paying $1,000 given the current sentiment and market just feels like A LOT. I know it’s in line with past legendary drops, but still. Will it sell out? Absolutely. And will those legendary moments be worth it — very likely. But personally, I’d feel better about collectors getting bigger wins than see more money printed for Dapper at the moment.
More info on the drops (which kick off Wednesday, Sept. 21 with Archive packs) here.
Smile For A Snapshot 📸
Top Shot took the long-awaited Leaderboard snapshot on Friday, locking in the Top 750 for the first rewards in the program:
Following the announcement that the snapshot would occur after Sept. 6, there had been some testiness over the wait — with collectors seeing their numbers fluctuate during the 10 days.
I wasn’t a Leaderboard grinder myself (only locked my Chicago Bulls moments), but there did seem to be plenty of users fighting for that Top 750 – including some serious achievers:
The reward will be a rare, Top Shot Debut ‘Team Reel’, the first multi-highlight moments to hit the platform.
We have nothing to compare it to currently on TS, but I expect the first Team Reels to carry some decent value — Top 750 wasn’t cheap to accomplish. In addition to the collectible aspect, I’d bet we will also see some utility in Flash Challenges as a wildcard once the season gets rolling.
Although it’s a far different situation, Rare Team Melts on NFL All Day range from $82 (Tennessee Titans) to $610 (Buffalo Bills) on the marketplace — which my gut tells me is a nice range for what we could see these rewards at.
